“I’m a girl dad,” Kobe Bryant once told ESPN anchor Elle Duncan, and now the late NBA superstar’s words are inspiring proud fathers to celebrate being “girl dads” in his honor.
Fathers across the globe are sharing photos of themselves with their daughters and using #girldad as a way of paying tribute to the late 41-year-old NBA legend.
Many Sharing Memories With Kobe Bryant in Tribute to the Late NBA Legend
Many people have been sharing their stories about Kobe Bryant in the wake of his death. After the helicopter crash that claimed his life, along with his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, and seven others, plenty of these memories have been surfacing as tribute.
But there is one story that was shared about Bryant that has touched fathers everywhere, and inspired a social media movement.
“I met Kobe one time, backstage at an event for ESPN in New York,” anchor Elle Duncan began her story during a recent SportsCenter broadcast. She says that she instantly thought to herself that she needed to get a picture with the NBA legend “for the ‘gram.”
But the chance meeting backstage was more than just a photo op. It turns out that Duncan, an expecting mother at the time, and Bryant, a father of three girls at the time, ended up talking for a while about one of Bryant’s greatest joys in life: being a “girl dad.”
“I would have five more girls if I could,” Bryant told Duncan. “I’m a girl dad.”
People everywhere loved Duncan’s memory of Bryant, and the emotional retelling quickly went viral. But the clip has hit a little different with fathers who also have daughters.
